Integration effects of pylon geometry on a high-wing transport airplane
An investigation was conducted in the Langley 16-Foot Transonic Tunnel to determine the installation effects of a series of pylons that had differing cross-sectional shapes on the pressure distributions and aerodynamic characteristics of a 1/24-scale high wing transport. The tests were conducted at Mach numbers at 0.70 and 0.80 at angles of attack from -3 degrees to 4 degrees with the pylons tested at various toe angles between 5 degrees inboard and 5 degrees outboard. Results of this study indicate that the installed drag was lowest for the pylons with a compression pylon type design which kept the flow under the wing in the pylon/wing junction comparable to the clean wing velocities
I Cannot Sing You Here, But For Songs of Where: Contemporary Alt-folksong and Articulations of Place
This practice-based research questions the potential defining characteristics and status of contemporary alt-folksong and its role(s) in the articulation of place through a collection of twelve original songs with accompanying written research. The thesis relates the term âplaceâ to the notion of subjectivity, autobiography and the performance of identity as they relate to geographic experience (Tuan 1997; Agnew 2005). Place is addressed from the perspective of a subject both re- and dis-located, and as such, diasporic neurosis concerning home and authenticity leads to a focus on aspects of place related to my past (Shetland), heritage (Ireland), present (Cornwall), and âin betweenâ (AugĂ© 1995). Methodologically, songs respond to, and inform, written/ read/ listened research, with a âdiaristâ mode of writing linking audio and text. Songs are generated through engagement with these research methods, and through field trips and recordings, influencing the directions of page-based enquiry.
Early chapters draw on theories of Popular Music (Moore 1993; Eisenberg 2005) and Postmodernism (Jameson 1998), but also look to ethnomusicology of Folksong (Gammon 2008; Boyes 1993), and interviews with practitioners (Hayman 2011; Collyer 2010), characterising the relationship between traditional music and contemporary Alt-folk. Chapter 2 introduces psychoanalytic theory (Lacan 1977; Minsky 1998) in locating the three places within development of the subject. Each place is subsequently addressed respectively through appropriation of Lacanâs Imaginary, Symbolic and Real as a means of investigating the subjectâs relationship to each. Chapter 3 discusses autobiographic theory (Marcus 1994; Anderson 2001), assessing the value of such a songwriting method, and aspects of musical âmeaningâ (Small 1998; Moore 1993). Chapter 4 investigates the use of production/recording technologies as themselves sources of meaning (Doyle 2005; Barthes 2000). Conclusions, in songs and text, work towards articulation of the âoutsideâ nature of the itinerant in these aspects of (non)place, and the capacity of Alt-folksong to voice this state
Some Observations on the Effect of Iodine Administration upon Sheep
On account of the occasional incidence of goitre and death of lambs produced on the experiment station farm, an experiment on the administration of potassium iodide to the pregnant ewes was carried on in 1917-18. Three lots of four on the same ration were fed from 2 to 15 grains potassium iodide daily. Results on the prevention of goitre in the young were not conclusive, but the passage of the iodine into the milk of the ewes was demonstrated, and pronounced unfavorable results from too large a dose of iodine were obtained, especially in the lots receiving the larger allowances. These unfavorable effects were not particularly in the vigor of the new-born and the lack of resistance to disease
Presynchronizing PGF2α and GnRH injections before timed artificial insemination CO-Synch + CIDR program
Fixed-time artificial insemination is an effective management tool that reduces the
labor associated with more conventional artificial insemination programs requiring
detection of estrus. The 7-day CO-Synch + controlled internal drug release (CIDR)
insert protocol has been shown to effectively initiate estrus and ovulation in cycling
and non-cycling suckled beef cows, producing pregnancy rates at or greater than 50%
in beef cows. The gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) injection that begins the
CO-Synch + CIDR program initiates ovulation in a large proportion of cows, particularly
anestrous cows. The CIDR, which releases progesterone intravaginally, prevents
short estrous cycles that usually follow the first postpartum ovulation in beef cows. Our
hypothesis was that inducing estrus with a prostaglandin injection followed 3 days later
with a GnRH injection, 7 days before applying the 7-day CO-Synch + CIDR protocol,
might increase the percentage of cycling cows that would exhibit synchronous follicular
waves after the onset of the CO-Synch + CIDR protocol. We also hypothesized that
the additional GnRH injection would increase the percentage of anestrous cows that
would ovulate, thereby increasing pregnancy outcomes
Updated perspectives on educational diagnosticiansâ understanding of reading assessments
Chappell, Stephens, Kinnison, and Pettigrew (2009) conducted a study investigating educational diagnosticians knowledge of early reading development. Our study replicated the work of Chappell et al. through a mixed methods design that investigated educational diagnosticiansâ perceptions and knowledge of early reading development. Additionally, our study sought to gain a better understanding of how educational diagnosticians selected assessment instruments. Our findings suggested that educational diagnosticians may lack understanding of the early developmental processes of reading and that there may be limited use of diagnostic assessment instruments when evaluating students who are struggling to read
Creation of Two Valid Scales: Willingness to Fly in an Aircraft and Willingness to Pilot an Aircraft
The purpose of the current study was to develop two scales that could be used concurrently or independently to measure passenger willingness to fly (WTF), and aviator willingness to pilot (WTP), respectively. This is especially useful to determine challenges involving acceptance of new aviation technology for both pilots and passengers. There were five stages in developing the WTF scale for passengers, following Hinkinâs scale development process. Cronbachâs Alpha and Guttmannâs Split Half tests were used to confirm high internal consistency and reliability, while factor analysis was used to confirm construct validity. The scale was tested in order to confirm sensitivity to differences in actual participant willingness to fly. After developing the WTF scale for passengers, researchers made minor lexical adjustments and created the WTP scale, calculating Cronbachâs Alpha, Guttmannâs Split Half test, and factor analysis; thus, ensuring high internal consistency, reliability and validity. These two scales may help provide researchers with a better applied understanding of applications within the aviation and consumer perceptions literature and also assist with pilot training and acceptance of new aviation technology
